We are fully committed to the development of physical education within all key stages of the curriculum, and provide a positive learning environment where students feel confident, safe and thrive on the need to develop themselves, physically, mentally and emotionally. We encourage positive values through a variety of teaching strategies and methods in order to gain the best results from all students, irrespective of gender or ability.
In addition to our GCSE, A-level and BTEC courses, we also provide students with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills as part of the Cavendish Leadership Academy. Students frequently assist our School Sports Co-ordinator with festivals or competitions within our family of schools.
We believe that for learning to be truly inclusive it should be personalised for each student. This is something we have worked hard to develop recently and which has had a positive impact on our results. By inviting Year 11 students to choose the activities they would like to take part in, we aim for them to find an activity that they enjoy and continue to be involved in after the unit has ended.
The opportunities we provide to students are not confined to the school timetable: extra-curricular activities are crucial to promoting lifelong participation in physical activity. It is vital that students take part in physical activity outside of school not only to improve fitness and skill levels but also as part of a healthy lifestyle. Our staff freely give up their time to create opportunities for extra-curricular clubs and fixtures, and we expect students to attend at least one club per term.
The students from Cavendish benefit from some excellent facilities including a brand new state of the art 3G astro turf, a sports hall, fitness suite and gymnasium. This allows us to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all students, irrespective of age, gender or ability. We have a thriving Leadership Academy, with many of our leaders assisting in the organisation of not only school, but district and county sporting events in collaboration with DSSSN (Dacorum Secondary Schools Sports Network) who are based here at The Cavendish School.
Facilities are allocated to staff, rather than sports or activities and they are able to tailor the curriculum to the needs of the students within their group.
PE at KS3 is very varied and builds on basic skills and strategies. Students have 2 lessons of 1 hour per week.
Students maintain their 2 hours of PE per week, with possible additional activities introduced such as trampolining, team building, orienteering, pop lacrosse. Students have the opportunity to follow a predominantly aesthetic or games pathway, however there is cross over throughout the year.
In Year 11, students are given options every half term and choose an activity that they would like to do. These are generally very varied and participation rates are very high.
Year 12 students have 1 hour of sport allocated to their timetables every week. They are given options every half term.
